On the subject of rejection

Sometimes it’s a good thing. Sometimes, like yesterday’s post, the sting is almost removed by a caring editor who makes you smile even as you shrug off yet another failure.

And sometimes it’s good for other reasons. I recently sent sample chapters of my novel to a well-regarded UK literary agency. Their form rejection letter, which arrived yesterday, had nine errors in it, including failing to spell the agency name correctly. Somehow, although I want my novel published very badly, I don’t want those people representing me.

A little teaser for tomorrow. I’m going to be running an interview with one of the best slush pile readers I know, and discovering what inspires him to plough through the hundreds of stories sent to him to assess, and what he thinks writers should do to improve their chances of getting published …
