Renewing the Muse

I bang on a lot about the harsh practicalities of the writing business, but sometimes you have to let yourself sink into the current of life and allow the world to flow through you. Ray Bradbury says it best: We are cups, constantly and quietly being filled. The trick is knowing how to tip ourselves over and let the beautiful stuff out.

On Friday I went to be filled with beautiful stuff. We spent the day in the New Forest, a place that has inspired great writing (Children of the New Forest, for a start) and great art, but usually on the small, calm, contemplative scale.

The Forest an ideal place to let the muse renew itself and this stream, summer-low and scented with gorse, was the place that I ended up sitting, watching the ponies and thinking how lucky I am to be a writer.

Writing is a tough trade – everybody needs to know where the beautiful stuff is for them, so that they can go to be filled by it, before tipping it out for everyone to share. Whether an evening on the beach, a piano sonata or a night spent drumming at a rave is your thing, remember to give your muse a chance to renew.
