Words and pictures

I’ve been involved in a two year project which presents stories and paintings of gardens in four cities – to me the link between image and narrative has always been a necessary one. Today though, I spent time with a student who only ‘hears’ characters rather than seeing them. His internal world is entirely auditory. This reminded me of an exercise I get my students to undertake – here’s a potted version for you:

Read the list of words. Pay attention to your first reaction. What is the first association you have with the word? Is it a picture, a noise, a smell, a feeling, a taste? Tick under the heading that most represents your first impression. When completed, add the number of ticks to get your score – the highest number is your primary mode. Your primary mode is the one you use to process the world and present it to others. Learning how to view the world and present it through other modes can add a huge amount to your writing – more on that tomorrow. Post your scores as comments if you like … let’s see how we all do!

That only one triggered taste is interesting. I’m not too bothered about food. Never really felt hungry until I was in my forties.
