Tales of the DeCongested Anthology Launch and Exhibition Opening

29th June 2006, 7pm

2nd Floor Gallery Space, Foyles Bookshop

Come celebrate the launch of a new independent publishing company, Apis Books, together with its first publication, Tales of the DeCongested, Volume One. There will be plenty of wine, plus readings, book signings, and the Tales of the DeCongested exhibition.

Held monthly in the dedicated performance space at Foyles Bookshop, Tales of the DeCongested (www.decongested.com) is London’s only reading event solely for short stories. Set up in 2003 by Paul Blaney and Rebekah Lattin-Rawstrone, Tales has worked to raise the profile of the short story in London and to provide a platform for new writing. Past readers include: Ali Smith, Candida Clark, Nicholas Royle, Stella Duffy and Shelley Silas, as well as the dozens of new writers for whom the event was founded.

Edited by Paul Blaney and Rebekah Lattin-Rawstrone, Tales of the DeCongested, Volume One, is the fruit of more than two years of successful readings. The anthology includes the best stories read at the event as well as original stories by Ali Smith and Nicholas Royle.

‘This fabulous collection has high energy, a huge range of emotion (including some wonderfully funny stories), an immediate and contemporary tang, and a level of technical bravura that had me squealing with delight.’ Sara Maitland

‘Anyone who cares about the contemporary short story will be enthralled by this collection.’ Julia Bell

The Tales of the DeCongested exhibition celebrates both the event itself and the short story in general. The exhibition consists of: pictures of previous events; a listening station where you can hear stories from the anthology read by the authors; a flash fiction section celebrating the short short story form; and various art works inspired by stories in the anthology. Participating artists include: Mimei Thompson, Katie Jones, Sue Barr and Lucy Bainbridge. The exhibition runs until July 7th.

I shall be reading at this event – wish me luck …!

I’ve published a story from Frank Goodman – who’s also in the anthology on my site and given the Cella Bar date a plug. Could I tempt you to add a story to unmadeup.com? It’s a, cough, narrative non-fiction site…
